BLACK HISTORY MONTH LECTURE
The Neighborhoods of New York City - "Harlem: The African-American Mecca," with Dr. Ronald J. Brown
@ Mid-Manhattan Library
Date: 2/25/09
Time: 6:30 PM
Admission: Free
The transformation of Irish, German, and Jewish Harlem into African-American Mecca began in the late 20th century when the first well-to-do black Knickerbockers moved to 138th Street. Then educated black immigrants from the Caribbean came, followed by educated migrants from throughout the United States. Finally, the outbreak of the First World War drew hundreds of thousands of farm kids from the rural South and African-American Harlem was a city within a city. Join us in witnessing this phenomenal history marked by the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Depression, immigration from Africa, and the present gentrification of the city.
